Child reading to other children
Hello from all at the Dharma School

Classroom structure

In the Early Years we create an environment that helps the transition between home and school. We encourage a caring approach through group participation and children are appreciated for their unique spirit. We value creativity and imagination in all areas of the curriculum.

Through simple meditations, stories and discussion they become more aware of their own thoughts and feelings, and learn how to express them to others within a supportive group.

We encourage children in their primary school years to learn skills and express their understanding according to their readiness. Our differentiated, topic-based approach is informed but not constrained by the National Curriculum, with the flexibility to explore and develop according to the teacher's strengths and the childrenís interests. Teachers endeavour to give children creative opportunities and factual learning is enhanced by drama, story writing, poetry, music, I.T., discussions and a wide range of artistic and hands on activities.

Our broad and balanced curriculum includes a core programme of literacy, numeracy, science, religious education, history, civic studies, geography and personal, social and health education. We offer music, French, movement, games, environmental and computer studies and after-school activities.

As well as good academic progress, we believe that emotional development and social aptitude is an essential aspect of personal growth and character; that clear thinking develops understanding and wisdom and that good hearts hold ethical values. This approach to learning creates a precious seed that grows within all our children and is carried beyond their years in The Dharma School ready to ripen as the students mature into young adults.
